North Brabant, the world is getting warmer towards Brabant
Noord-Brabant is generally seen as the province of good Burgundian food and the associated lifestyle. The people from Brabant certainly love good food, there is nothing wrong with that, but the province covers a little more than just food.
The most characteristic food from Brabant must be the sausage rolls from Brabant. These sandwiches were invented in Brabant and the people from Brabant are quite proud of that.
Large amont of museums
Noord-Brabant offers museums, especially in the larger towns. Just think of the van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Noord-Brabant Museum in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Stedelijk Museum Breda in Breda and in Tilburg Natuurmuseum Brabant and the De Pont museum.
Culture, Theater and Pop stages
You will also find large theaters and pop venues in the province, such as the Chassé Theater in Breda or the Parktheater Eindhoven. One of the large, renowned music venues in Tilburg is 013
which has the largest music venues in the Netherlands. In addition, there is the Effenaar in Eindhoven that often offer concerts offering great artists.
Room for upcoming artists
Of course there are also smaller venues such as Mezz in Breda, w2 Concertzaal in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and the smaller venues of 013 and the Effenaar.
The somewhat smaller halls offer concerts by emerging artists or larger names in an intimate setting.
A piece of Belgium in Holland
A piece of Belgium in the heart of Brabant in the form of Baarle-Nassau where the national border literally runs through the living room of people.
This relatively small village is partly Dutch and partly Belgian due to the geographical location of the place.
Philips and the importance for Eindhoven
Eindhoven, however difficult to imagine, was once a fortified town. Eindhoven is also much older than most people think. Already in 1232 the city was granted its city rights by duke Hendrik van Brabant. However, the reason why Eindhoven became famous is largely due to the Dutch company Philips.
And of course Eindhoven has the Evoluon, which was far ahead of its time when it was built. The building has the shape of a UFO or flying saucer and was built on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Philips.
The building was used as an educational technology museum from 1966 to 1989 and attracted large numbers of visitors until the 1970s. This was partly because the visitors were allowed to experiment themselves and were able to operate demonstration models. That was completely new at the time and especially attractive to students and other young people.
Another important place in Brabant is of course Tilburg, which has grown thanks to the textile industry. Wool production in particular has contributed a great deal to this. Ammonia was a necessary ingredient in the processing of the wool. the ammonia that was needed was produced by the workers at home.
They were given a jug home where the urine of the family from the last 24 hours was collected. The term “Kruikenzeiker” as the Tilburg people call it comes from here.
Vincent van Gogh was born in this place
Nobody would probably know Zundert if not one of the most famous Dutch painters was born here. Zundert was the birthplace of none other than Vincent van Gogh. Without van Gogh, she would have had her strawberries and her flower parade.
Carnival below the rivers
Talking about Noord-Brabant without quoting carnival is almost a criminal offense. Carnival is the largest folk festival in the province that returns every year.
Carnival was originally a Christian pagan folk festival. It falls within the Christian tradition on the Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday immediately preceding the 40-day Lent.
Carnival is the festival of foolishness, ridicule and exuberance. In the meantime, it has become common practice in various towns and villages in North Brabant to open carnival on Carnival Friday. Carnival is closed on Ash Wednesday, but traditions vary by region.
In the vast majority of Noord-Brabant, there is a conclusion with Sausage bread, coffee with Schrobbeler and sometimes with a Brabant coffee table. In the regions of Bergen op Zoom, Werkendam and Woudrichem, where fisheries are still established, naturally more fish products are eaten there.
Kaatsheuvel and the Efteling
The Efteling is the largest attraction park in the Netherlands. The Efteling is located in Kaatsheuvel and includes a wide variety of activities for young and old.
There is the fairytale forest where the little ones among us can lose themselves in the world of fairy tales. And where you as a young person can fully enjoy the different roller coasters.
